Home Maintenance: How can I keep my house in tip-top condition?
- Want to make sure you don’t forget to take care of your home? Make a checklist of the items that will need a checkup at some point. Include model and serial numbers as well as contact names and phone numbers. If you have work done to an appliance, keep a record of the repairs and the date the work was completed. This will make future repairs much quicker and easier.
- Change your air-conditioner filters on the first of every month. It is a good idea to purchase twelve filters at one time. This gives you a year’s supply. You can’t use the excuse that you need to go to the store!
- To prevent power outages, do not plug too many appliances into one circuit.
- To clean your disposal, push a full tray of ice cubes down the disposal with cold running water.
- To clean water jets in a whirlpool tub, fill the tub with water past the jets and add a cup of Cascade powdered detergent. Run the jets for about 10 minutes. Rinse the tub. Do this about once a month to ensure no bacteria builds up in the jets.
- Once a year, clean the coils on the back or underneath the refrigerator.
- During the summer months, make sure to water the foundation of your house if it is on a concrete slab. This will keep the home’s foundation from cracking and settling more than it should.
- Keep an eye on your roof and gutters to make sure none of the shingles or gutters have come loose. Keep the gutters clean from debris.
- Make sure to be safe when working on any household appliances or in high-reaching areas. Some home improvements may need a professional! Don’t be afraid to get help!
